Knowing Dog First Aid Is Much More Than Simply Having A First Aid Kit You certainly have heard the well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are no better since they are rather inquisitive and known for going places and getting into situations that they shouldn't. Despite the fact that this doesn't always end badly, they now and again do end up injuring themselves somehow so it's a smart move to have knowledge of some dog first aid.
Somewhere around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she managed to discover a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and made up her mind to play there for awhile. When she returned to the house the burrs had managed to work their way firmly into areas on her face, her ears and her little behind.
It was nighttime so the Vet was not open and a visit to the animal hospital would most likely have been extremely expensive. So she had to endure my tearful yet laughing undertaking as I was able to one by one wiggle those burrs out of her hair as she struggled and yelped for at least two hours. They were matted so severely and right next to the skin that cutting them out was not a possibility.
A tranquilizer would have been wonderful but I didn't have anything at all for her. Because there was no blood or life-threatening injury, showing up at the emergency hospital was not necessary ... that time.
That is a heart breaking yet amusing story to describe and hopefully an experience she has long forgotten through the years. It was also a trivial thing although painful and exasperating for both of us. But it might have been even worse.
As a committed pet owner you should really know at least basic first aid for dogs so that you can be prepared for more extreme emergencies. You will often be able to save on Vet charges for less serious problems like the one I had. But you may well find yourself in a situation where you need to help alleviate your canine's pain or provide life-saving actions until you can make it to the Vet.
Having a dog first aid kit is without a doubt a smart move but you also have to know the proper actions to take in a true emergency. Always have phone numbers conveniently located for both your regular Vet as well as the local animal emergency clinic. And be trained in basic canine first aid on your own.
I've never been in a position where I needed to provide life-saving medical actions for my furry loved one and maybe you haven't had to either. But would you know the activities to do if faced with a life-threatening situation that involved your four-legged friend?
Simple Dog House Plans Make For A One Of A Kind Puppy Home If you've ever watched "Underdog To Wonderdog" on Animal Planet then you know how elaborate dog houses CAN be. But everyone knows that you don't really need anything like that for your dog ... but room for some customization and individuality is always welcome.
