On account of the expanded internal memory, Amazon chose not to add an SD expansion slot to the Kindle 2.

Faster Functioning - Amazon had faster operation in mind when they created this second version of the Kindle wireless reading device. Page-refreshing is much faster and it contains a much faster CPU than its predecessor. There is now an International version of the Kindle 2 that operates in more than a hundred other countries. The only official difference in the International version is that it accesses a different network than the US versions.

Other advantages of the new Kindle include an improved pointing device, better quality picture, a Whispersync option and a text to speak feature.
